About the Barnyard

Milo and Otis

The Barnyard Behavior model for training and behavioral modification adheres to the basic understanding that both an animal’s heredity and an animal’s environment play a crucial role in their behavior.  We are dedicated to using a force free framework in all of our training and treatment protocols.

Barnyard Behavior is owned by Claire F. Cario.  Claire has been working within small animal care, adoption and veterinary medicine since 2001.  She received her MA in Psychology and a Certification in the Advanced Psychology of Animal Behavior and Conservation, and is registered with the New York State Education Department.  Her philosophy is grounded in an understanding of human and non-human animals and applies psychological, ecological and evolutionary principles that relate to social behavior, cognitive processes, learning, experience and ontogeny, cultural activity, communication, and the interdependence of physiological and psychological processes. In short, Claire stresses the role humans have in training and modifying their animal’s behavior and works to strengthen the bond between pets and their human families.

Claire apprenticed with one of New York’s top Canine Behaviorists and was certified as a Canine Trainer and Behaviorist and has earned certification through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CPDT-KA) and is a Fear Free Certified Trainer.  She trained Therapy Dogs for 7 years and was the Brooklyn and Queens Executive Trainer for The Good Dog Foundation. Additionally, Claire consults with the ASPCA’s Anti-Cruelty Behavior Team and is a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT) and The Animal Behavior Society (ABS). Currently, Claire is also the  Behavior and Enrichment Assistant Manager at Animal Care Centers of NYC.
